The Luštica Bay Beach Drive from Tivat Airport

Big open Adriatic, a resort complex, and the cove beaches the resort doesn't own, all within forty minutes of your rental pickup

Where Luštica fits

Luštica is the long, low peninsula that closes off the Bay of Kotor from the open sea. From Tivat Airport the drive out is short on distance but slow on time, the road winds between olive terraces and small villages, and you rarely get above 50 km/h. Think 40–50 minutes to reach the Luštica Bay development, slightly more to the far coves on the outer edge.

The name Luštica is doing double duty these days. It's both the geographic peninsula and the brand of a large resort-and-marina complex on its southern shore. This post covers the drive and the public coves; not every visitor needs or wants the resort itself.

The route out of TIV

Leave the airport, head south-west on the coast road, and pick up the Luštica signposting past Radovići. For the first stretch you're on the same tarmac described in the Krtoli loop; after Radovići the road climbs over the peninsula's spine. The ascent is steady rather than steep; switchbacks are gentle. Standard hire cars handle it without complaint.

At the top the views open both ways: Tivat Bay and the airport behind you, the open Adriatic ahead. The descent to the far coast is where the road tightens. Drive in lower gears, use the brake lightly, and don't cut corners, blind bends here see the occasional scooter.

Beaches worth aiming for

Žanjic is the best-known public beach on the peninsula, a pebble-and-shingle cove with clear water, reached via a paved road that ends in a car park above the cove itself. Walk down the last stretch. In peak summer Žanjic gets busy by 11:00; weekdays outside August are calmer. Sun loungers and basic beach bars operate May to September.

Mirišta, the next bay along, is smaller and often quieter. A single family-run restaurant sits on the pebbles. Accessed by the same approach road as Žanjic with a short turn-off.

Plavi Horizonti (Blue Horizons) sits on the inner side of the peninsula facing Traste Bay, a flat sandy beach, pine-shaded car park, family-friendly. The shallow shelving suits small children. It's the closest of the three to the airport and worth knowing about if you just need a dip on arrival day.

Luštica Bay: what it is

Luštica Bay is a large planned resort and marina development. It has a hotel, apartments, a golf course (in phases), restaurants, a marina and public-access promenades. Whether you stop depends on your taste, the architecture is new, the food is mid-to-high priced, and the contrast with the old stone villages along the same road is stark. Parking is signposted and manageable.

Rose, the old fishing village

At the tip of the peninsula, Rose (pronounced ROH-zeh) is a stone hamlet on the water reached by a narrow one-lane access road, the last two kilometres require patience. There are a handful of small konobas on the waterfront, mostly open in season, specialising in grilled fish. The walk along the old sea wall is the sight. It's a fair weather drive: avoid in heavy rain or strong wind.

Practical tips

  • Road width: Expect pull-in-and-wait on a few stretches. Courtesy goes a long way.
  • Fuel: Fill up in Tivat or at Radovići. The peninsula itself has limited forecourts.
  • Water shoes: Most beaches here are pebble, not sand. Even Žanjic has sharp shingle in places.
  • Parking fees: Small paid car parks operate at the popular coves in summer. Cash euros are safer than cards.
  • Boat alternative: From Tivat marina, water taxis and day-charters reach the same coves, see our boat-plus-car day guide for combining the two.
  • Season: May, June and September are the sweet spot. August is beautiful but you'll share it with everyone else.

Pairing options

This drive is a clean day out on its own. If you want to stretch it, combine with the Krtoli loop on the way out, or finish with dinner on the Tivat waterfront.
